question of the week: is there such a thing as over-participation in class? i have so much to say and am geekily excited about everything i'm learning, at times it feels like i'm going to explode while waiting for my turn to speak in class. (that is, when other people actually speak up).
my point being, does there come a point when i am being TOO active? i don't babble on for ever, but it feels like i always have a response to what other students share or another point i want to raise or quotations to back things up....
i don't want to get the reputation of "oh there she goes again..." or of being a brown-noser, but i also want to make sure i'm not imposing upon myself restrictions and self-editing. that process is so detrimental to my psyche and really fucks with self-esteem, you know? i had waaaaay too much of self-editing for "politeness" sake when i lived in japan and it really did a number on me! never EVER again.

Good GRIEF do I know this feeling.
Just being aware of one's eagerness can often make a huge difference. Can other people get their opinions in? Do you leave enough quiet space to encourage shyer people to speak up? If so, then keep on doing what you're doing. You're there to learn, ain't ya?
Yeah...I think it's important to think about how the space is also a place for OTHER people to learn as well.
As Emily said, some people, like myself, require there to be a bit of silence in order to step up and speak out. So...just every once in a while, make sure to leave a little space, just to see what happens. Who knows? You might find that some people who need a little space to speak have really interesting things to say!
I'm not arguing for you to censor yourself, just leave a little space for others and practice listening in the moment -- really thinking about what others' are saying as they say it and incorporating it into your own thought.
I heard a quote last week on an academic blog saying that male students never worry about monopolizing class discussions....Don't have data to back that up, though, so I don't know.
Is it possible to be overprepared? Oh my yes. That was me all the way through college.....
